I am an academic, a therapist, and the editor of MAD in South Asia.
Our guest today is Dr.
Khamir Kedya, and he has a really interesting history spanning continents and disciplines.

Kiria is a physician and an anthropologist at Harvard Medical and at the University of Zimbabwe.
He's a Rhodes Scholar and 2023 New America Fellow, and we are here to discuss his new book, The Empire of Madness, which calls for an end to psychiatry in its current form.
Kamir, welcome to Madden America.
All right, let's get started.
You say that the purpose of psychiatry as it is is to anesthetise pain and send people back to work essentially.
And for those who can't be sent back to work, to quieten them so the system can remain productive.
In other words, you say that in its current form, psychiatry is the handmaiden of colonization and capitalism.
So could you elaborate a little bit what you mean?
But what was a defining moment for you um when the scales fell off your eyes and you realized that the way psychiatry was practiced, especially in America, and especially when exported to Zimbabwe, was more of an agent of harm.
Yeah, bizarre hairstyle and tattoos are a part of the MSA, right?
Yeah, I know.
So could you tell me, could you give an example of what would mutual aid look like?
Let's say, um what did it look like for you in Zimbabwe?
