Yeah.

I mean, Rome faced some fundamental problems.

And the thing about the Caesars and Pompeys of this world is that although their solutions for these problems were not the solutions that were ideal, at least they recognized the problems.

Yes.

So my big line, which I repeat ad nauseum, comes from this great novel, The Leopard.

You know, it's a novel about revolution in Sicily in 1860.

And the main character is this old aristocrat who doesn't want to change.

And he doesn't have any children of his own, but he's very devoted to his nephew.

And his nephew comes and shocks him and says, I'm going to join the revolution.

And the old guy says, how can you do that?

And he says, uncle, you have to understand, if we want things to stay the same, everything has to change.

She was a wise woman.

Yes.

Yeah.

I knew there was a reason I liked her.

But I think that's absolutely true.

I mean, it's a little bit cynical, but I think it's absolutely true.

I mean, I think that what a politician has to do is to, first of all, assess his or her society and say, what are the strengths?

What are the core values that we really have to keep?

And then say, okay, but we can't have everything we want.
