What are the things we're going to compromise on?

And we can't have everything we want because the world is always changing.

Right.

And so I think that a wise politician understands that.

I agree.

Yeah.

I mean, that's a really good example.

And so that tells us both the strengths of Cato, what's admirable about him, and the weaknesses of Cato.

I think he's a better politician than Cato.

But I think that where he fails is that...

he too didn't understand the impossibility of keeping the Republic the way that it was.

I mean, the way I see it, here we have Rome, which is now ruling somewhat like 50 million people.

And the idea that you can have a charmed circle of a few families in and around the city of Rome ruling this permanently without opening the doors to outsiders, that's a non-starter.

That's a no-go.

And Pompey and Caesar both understood that.

whereas Cato and Cicero did not.

And I think that's what's so problematic about them.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but he was not made that way.

He was a man of courage and a man of principle.

It certainly took a lot of courage for him to stand up to Antony the way that he did, but he was in a way, he was too clever by half and he was vain.
