My favorite story from Cicero is from the letter to Atticus where he describes Caesar's visit to his villa.

And he says at the end, he's not the kind of guy to whom you'd say, come back again soon.

Right.

I mean, it's a long story, first of all, as you know, and it takes about a century for the republic to fall.

Yeah.

But long story short, I think it has to do with the rupture in what colleagues of mine call the civic bargain.

Yeah.

And the civic bargain is that Roman citizens would serve in the military.

They defend the country.
