He is on the side of the conservatives, the old guard,

the people who call themselves the best men, whereas the other side are the people who call themselves the men of the people.

We might call them populists.

And Sulla comes in and makes himself dictator, kind of twisting the meaning of an old Roman institution that's supposed to be temporary.

He's dictator without any time limit on it.

And he reforms the constitution to try to turn the clock back.

Before you had all these populists to try to make Rome back to the conservative way it was before.

But he steps down after a year.

Probably he was ill because he dies shortly after that.

And the Republic is back in business, but slowly it devolves into what it had been.

So is Caesar.
