It's very active, but there's also a lot of tension.

because the Republic is depending on these big guys, the big men, who are going to represent Pompey and Caesar, come to the fore.

There's also a third one, as you know, Crassus, who also wants to be one of the big boys and one of the great military leaders.

And the other thing that we have to factor in is that, in a way, success has spoiled Rome.

And the old-fashioned Roman's

who were afraid of the Senate and who respected the power of the Senate are being replaced by new generations who think, you know, I'm really hot stuff and I should be ruling the world.

So you get that with Pompey, you get that with Caesar.

Crassus would have liked to do that, but he fails, of course.

And that's part of the story as well.

These are people who don't respect the old rules.

Rules are for suckers.

And don't you know how great I am?

So there's part of that as well.

So on the one hand, it's a society that's still playing by the old rules.

But on the other hand, there are people who won't play by these old rules.

They're populists.

as well, who are, you know, roiling the system.

They're riling things up.

There's a lot of tensions going on.
