Like, what do you think is going on here?
Why don't people notice this?
That's interesting.
So I guess I'm glad we're talking about it because anyone listening is going to hear it.
Now, you looked at hiring decisions and also this is kind of dark, like criminal sentencing.
Did it crop up there?
I don't want to make light of it, but I guess one piece of advice is like show up in court with a suit, a haircut, try to look your best.
I mean, that seems like a simple takeaway from this.
What would you want done?
I mean, it seems so simple.
It seems like, I don't know, bias training, which happens at every large corporation, could just add a little bit about this, make people more aware of it, and boom, that goes to sort of make things better.
Maybe not perfect, but better.
What would you want people to do, knowing what you know now from your research?
That's interesting.
It's like we have, on average, so much capacity to spot bias.
And once we start noticing other things, the other things fall by the wayside.
limited mentor capacities and it seems to be the case that yeah we're only focusing on one or two things and everything else is kind of outside of our awareness if attractiveness bias flies under the radar so easily like how do you think it is shaping outcomes in the world like do you think attractive people are getting better jobs better dating outcomes better court outcomes more follows on social media do you think this is going on all the time around us i mean
I know, I think it is.
It seems like an obvious answer to the question, but do you want to speak to it?
comes to hiring when it comes to court outcomes in court all these kinds of situations attract people do seem to get systematically yeah they have advantages there bastion i've enjoyed the chat and doubly so knowing that you came to the show despite the fact that i'm not in a very attractive individual thank you for being here thanks for having me bastion jaeger is a social psychology researcher at tilburg university in the netherlands
