This all went down back in the winter of 2011, right after my mother's supervisor died in a massive pile up on the interstate.

The company cleared out his office locker and gave my mum a box of his personal drafting tools and paperwork, and for some reason, she also kept a twisted metal piece of aluminum engine manifold from the wreckage or something like that.

A month later, once the initial shock wore off, my mum started acting completely strange.

She'd always slept with her bedroom door wide open, and

But out of nowhere, she started locking it tight at night.

She also started begging my older brother and me to drag our sleeping bags into her room and sleep on the floor next to her bed.

We took turns doing it, though we had absolutely zero clue why she suddenly became so terrified of her own house.

Eventually, though, she cracked and told us what was going on.

She said that one night she woke up from a brutal nightmare in a total panic, and noticed a dark mass standing perfectly still in the narrow hallway right outside of her door.

Apparently it just stood there, dead eyeing her right through the gap for what felt like about ten minutes, before it slowly turned around, tracked past the banister, and zipped down the main stairwell into the dark.
