my grandfather he was chosen because he was young strong and knew the mountain trails really well so he set off after dark the weather was bitterly cold that day there had been a hard frost that evening and the ground was stiff beneath his boots the moon was visible through the breaks in the clouds but it was only a thin crescent and provided almost no useful light beneath the trees he knew the main road would add several miles to the trip
