the first time that i experienced something that i couldn't explain i was 13 years old at that age i was already carrying around more anger than i knew what to do with my father had died the previous year after a really long illness and i'd reached that stage of grief where i wasn't really sad anymore i was angry and I was angry that he was gone, angry at my family for pretending things were getting better, angry at God, even though I wasn't sure I believed in God anymore. Mostly, I hated the fact that there was suddenly this enormous empty space in my life where my dad used to be, and I think that that's important because of what happened next. So, I was staying at my friend Clara's house for the weekend.
Her family lived in an old row house outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania. It was one of those buildings that always seemed colder inside than outside, with narrow rooms and creaking floors and radiators that made strange noises all night. But there were stories about that house too. A family had apparently died there decades earlier during some kind of a violent argument. Nobody seemed to agree on the details, but everyone in the neighborhood knew something bad had happened. Clara's parents, they didn't seem to care. They bought the place years later and they renovated it. During the renovation, though, they found a section of the upper floor where the timber underneath the boards was badly discolored.
There were dark stains in the old wood that apparently went much deeper than surface mold or water damage. Her father decided replacing the timber would cost too much. So they treated it instead, covered it, and put new flooring over top. After that, though, weird things supposedly started occurring. Doors would open, objects in the kitchen occasionally moved, people claimed that they'd see someone standing at the end of the hallway. Clara and I thought all of it was kind of funny, really. But we were 13, we thought that haunted houses were cool. So one night after everyone else had gone to bed... We pulled out an old Ouija board out of a cupboard. We put it on the bedroom floor, shut the door and we turned the lights off.
Looking back it was probably the worst possible thing that I could have done... I wasn't playing around because I wanted to see a ghost. I secretly wanted my father back. We put our hands on the planchette and started asking some questions. At first, nothing happened too. But then, all of a sudden, the planchette moved. It was slow at first, but...

Before I could answer, the wardrobe door began moving, slowly and then it rolled open. Inside was something that I knew hadn't been there earlier, a heavy old tool. It was lying on the floorboards just inside of the wardrobe.
I stared at it, Clara did too. Neither of us touched it. but then the mattress behind us made a noise a deep heavy compression like somebody had just sat down on it we both turned instantly but there was no one there but the mattress i could see was visibly depressed then i swear to you that i saw a shape it was barely distinguishable from the darkness but there seemed to be somebody sitting at the edge of the bed
