I haven't been camping since this happened. That probably sounds dramatic, especially considering how many people spend weekends in the Australian bush without ever experiencing anything remotely unusual. But after what happened during a trip a few years ago, I've just never been able to look at an isolated campsite the same way. There were three of us on that trip. We had chosen a fairly remote part of the Australian ranges, well away from the usual camping areas. We deliberately wanted somewhere quiet, so we'd left the maintained track and walked for several hours before finding a shallow clearing between a rocky ridge and a line of scrub. There were no other campers anywhere nearby, and we hadn't seen another person since leaving the main trail, in fact.
We set up three small shelters with enough distance between them that we could still hear each other if somebody shouted, but couldn't see the other camps after dark, and The evening was completely uneventful as well, and We cooked dinner, sat around talking, and eventually just went to bed. I remember falling asleep almost immediately. I was exhausted after all the walking, and But then, sometime after one in the morning, I woke up all of a sudden. At first I didn't know why. I was still lying inside of my sleeping bag, staring at the fabric above me. But then I heard voices. They sounded like people talking somewhere immediately outside, but There seemed to be two of them. My first thought was that we'd somehow been found out by another group.
But the longer that I listened, the less human the conversation sounded. There were pauses where you would expect words, followed by the same strange sequence of sounds repeating again. Three noises, then silence, and then three noises again. It wasn't a language that I recognized. It didn't even sound like somebody speaking normally. One voice was low and rough, while the other occasionally rose into something that almost resembled a laugh, in fact.
How did the three friends choose their remote Australian campsite?
But there was no humor in it and It sounded like someone had heard a person laughing and was attempting to reproduce the sound without understanding why humans do it almost. I know, bit of a weird explanation, but that's the best way that I can put it. Either way, I didn't move a muscle and I remember thinking that if there really were people outside, they'd eventually realize that somebody was awake and leave, but They didn't. The sounds remained in exactly the same general area for several minutes at least. Then they stopped. I waited. There was nothing, and I eventually convinced myself that I must be mishearing an animal or something. But that was when something struck the ground outside and A single heavy impact, then another one and another one, and
The sound began moving around the campsite, and It wasn't running exactly it was more like something heavy was deliberately putting its weight down with every step. What bothered me though was the speed. I could hear it near my shelter, and then suddenly it was somewhere beyond the fire pit. A few seconds later it seemed to be near one of my friends. Then it was all the way on the opposite side of the clearing, There was no gradual approach, and it seemed to move from like one location to another way too quickly, you might Eventually the footsteps stopped outside of my shelter, and And I could hear something breathing slowly and deeply. Then the outer fabric pulled inward. Not enough to collapse the shelter, but enough for me to see the material flex toward me and
Something was definitely pressing against it. I could hear the sniffing, short wet breaths, and I laid completely still.
