Okay, so 18 to 25 year olds who are either at university or TAFE or working are the loneliest demographic.
It makes no sense.
Why is that?
Because when you're at school...
You don't have to work for friendship, generally.
Like, in terms of, you're surrounded by kids who are at the same life stage, same milestones, lots in common, right?
And I'll get on to kids who struggle with friendships in school in a second.
But generally, you're surrounded by kids who you've got things in common with, right?
I don't think we, our kids, have developed that muscle of making small talk and walking into rooms where they don't know anyone.
And so the moment that you leave school, and if you're doing uni online...
uh and don't like to talk on the phone don't want to answer the phone it's fine but i think that muscle of friendship has to become intentional you you have to work for it the moment you leave school you're not going to be surrounded by all of these people that you're with a lot of friendship is about proximity and repetition that you're with the same people all the time well uni or tafe
That's out the window because it's all different people all the time.
You have to work much harder for it.
And so I think we haven't taught our kids these social skills of going into a party where you don't know anyone.
And it's really hard.
It is hard.
It's hard for everybody, right?
Turning up to things.
But I think so often our kids, we are uncomfortable with our kids being uncomfortable.
And so when our kids say to us, I don't want to go to that.
