I was really average, right?
And yet, despite that, I am someone who can tell you that overall, I really liked high school.
I had a good time.
Not every day.
Nobody likes every day.
But overall, I had a good time.
And I thought, why is that?
Why did I have a good time when all of the messaging, and it's only gotten worse, says that the only way your child is going to enjoy primary school or high school is if they're one of the shiny people?
that unless they are in the A basketball team or they've got a leadership badge or they're winning and they're standing out, they're not going to have a good experience.
And we've become more and more obsessed with that message that if my child's going to have a magical experience at school, they've got to stand out.
And I realized, because I didn't stand out, and I realized it's because
The best decision that we can make for ourselves in our lives, I believe, is something that by luck I got right, which is who you choose to hang around.
And so I chose...
lovely people to hang out with.
I chose friends.
I remember in grade eight, so this is in like 1985, I had a choice between continuing to hang out with a girl I'd been friends with in primary school who'd suddenly become very cool and edgy and her group of friends were shoplifting and doing all kinds of things.
Or I'd met these other two girls, Lynn and Robin,
who were not cool.
And they would agree with that.
I said that they were not cool, but we laughed so hard when we were together and I could be my real self.
