It's a really extraordinary book of real moral nuance and restraint about a woman who goes to be a secretary at The Hague, an Australian woman,

who sits there for a judge during a war crimes tribunal and finds herself making inadvertent and really uncomfortable eye contact with the person who's been charged with those crimes.

And she starts to think about questions of what it means for evil to be so banal and what it means to be complicit in ways you might not have ever thought about before.

And I think that's a really extraordinary, really extraordinary Australian novel.

And then I was at the Lifeline Book Fair a couple of weeks ago and bought for myself for four whole dollars a first edition of The Thorn Birds, which is either a bargain or a ripoff depending on your opinion of that particular text.

And what's your opinion?

I think it's Australia's ghost story.

I think it haunts us.

I think it haunts Australian literature.

I am fascinated with it as a kind of cultural meeting place more than I am as a work of literature.

But I think about this book more than I would like to when I start to think about the stories we tell ourselves and why particular stories resonate and we can't seem to get them out of our skin.

I also saw the miniseries.

Yeah.

Yeah, too young and have very complicated feelings about Brian Brown.

It's the heat between Brian and Rachel.

It's the heat.

That book, it does, it haunts us and I'm still trying to understand why and I find myself coming back to it as I write about things like Aussie Noir, as I write about the way in which we erase particular ways of thinking and talking and remembering things

our place.
