It's central to what I think everyone I know who works in criticism, who works in bookselling, will say exactly the same thing.

But what I loved hearing Cheryl tell her story is that I'm a country kid from rural and regional Western Australia.

And

I grew up in in libraries with books, with booksellers and teachers pressing things into my hands.

I didn't dream I could have this kind of career because I didn't see it.

And I think I would have been far less lonely had things like what Cheryl's invented existed when I was a kid growing up in the 90s in in WA.

And I'm just, these things are wonderful ways to get books in people's faces.

I'm often asked.

to, you know, as a critic, to to pontificate on the evils of Goodreads and book talk.

And I won't do it because I think it's wonderful that we have spaces where people talk to each other about books.

And like Cheryl, I think book people are the best people.

This book.

I thought to myself, I'll just read 20 or 30 pages a night for a month or so and then I'll chip away at it.

No, I read it in three feverish days, obsessive, obsessive days.

I'm gonna buy a box of these.

I've actually told the publisher this, I'm gonna buy a box of these books and hand it out to people like evil candy.
