That's a wonderful question.

I found myself so immersed in each one of the individual stories that I thought at any point, any one of them could have been sectioned out and been a novel on their own.

I almost read them that way.

And then for some of them, the deep pleasure is in finding that connectivity.

Is it that they've lived the same kind of life?

Is it that they die with the same kind of wounds, like a literary stigmata?

Is it they in

End up buried in the same way or the same place.

These sisters do haunt the book, but they don't haunt it so much that the stories individually don't matter.

I was so deeply invested in each one of those stories.

We have a couple, for instance, who find their deepest intimacy with one another, writing each other novels.

They sit across from one another and they write novels to one another, but they never really speak to one another except through

The page we find the stories of the gravediggers who bury Eliza and their story and how what happens to her body and both the dignity and the heresy of it infect sort of their children and the story that comes after.

I was sort of caught in each of them.

There's a woman who inherits one of Eliza's notebooks, but nobody believes her that it belongs.

To Eliza, and she sort of wrecks herself on the reef of the scholarship, trying to prove that what she has is a genuine relic.

Because of that, her daughters end up living in penury the way that Eliza does.

So every one of these stories I want to press into the hands of people on their own, but collectively they start telling something strange.

And wheeling about the way we're infected with literature, a way it gets under our skin, the way we pass stories on down generations, and not just the stories that are in books, but the stories that are whispered to one another, the secrets that we can't tell one another, the dark things that we've done or seen or wish we'd done.
