It happens in so many closed-off organisations and schools and institutions and religions.

So I think just even the fact that no-one even noticed that I wasn't at school or that surely the neighbours heard something or, you know, why did no-one ever speak up?

Because there's a part in your book, I think...

I was in the car once and my mum slapped me on the leg.

We were going to Target and she slapped me on the leg.

And then as we got out of the car, she made me pull my shorts down lower so that people didn't see the red hand mark on my leg.

And that was just like so normal.

I was just like, okay, I've got to do what I'm told.

Like it just wasn't like, yeah.

And it would never have occurred to me to tell any of my friends at school.

I think that was exactly it for me.

I just wanted to be a normal kid.

And I think I carried that into my 20s and my 30s where I was just like, I really want to deal with all this because I just want to be normal.

I just want to do what everyone else is doing.

And I think I did that for a really long time.

I was like, what's cool?

What's everyone else doing?

I learned on the go.

And then one day I looked at myself in the mirror a few years ago and I was like, I don't even know who I am.

I feel like I'm this collection of all these other people that I've looked at, you know, like, oh, it's cool to live in Bondi.
