I lied because I was terrified of getting hit.
And it's so strange to me now to think, you know, my dad used to walk around the house and close all the windows before he hit me so the neighbors wouldn't hear.
And just to think, you know, I had this moment when I was writing my book and I was like, but my mum would have heard that.
Like she would have been in the other room hearing me screaming.
And I'm not a mother, but I can't imagine as a mother how you could just and know that you're the one who's asked for that to happen as well is just so bizarre to me.
Yeah.
And I'm not trying to justify what they did or why they did it, but I do definitely think that a lot of what happened in the cult was justified by that fear of God and thinking that they were doing the right thing.
I think they genuinely in their own way all felt like they were doing the right thing.
And that stemmed from...
the people in power who were controlling them and telling them what they could and couldn't do.
And ultimately, if you didn't do that, you were at risk.
Your own soul was at risk and God would punish you and you might not make it to heaven.
So you better do all the things that they're telling you to do.
And that was one of them.
I was also just terrified of the pastors especially.
Like they held this like unquestionable, authoritative power.
Were they ever warm or were they always?
There was like one or two of the pastors who were like in other cities who were maybe like okay-ish pastors.
But mostly they were brutish men, you know, just very, just power hungry, not very friendly.
Yeah.
