Another puzzle, as I found out in Caltech, a world-leading researcher in the field often forsakes the promise of Los Angeles sitting right there on a convenient fault line to go all the way south instead to investigate shaking glaciers in Antarctica.

Professor, is it true that you have a book, at home I presume, written by Professor Bruce Bolt, once of Berkeley, and an Australian seismologist?

And he was the first person I ever interviewed in the United States before.

But you are also, would you call yourself a geophysicist in general or a seismologist?

I would mostly call myself a seismologist.

Is seismo a word, is it from Greece, meaning shaking or something?

And those vibrations tell you about the shape of the earth?

But what I don't quite understand, as you're in Los Angeles, where there's so much vibration going on and activity, you go to Antarctica a long way away.

Why is that?

Just imagine a mile, a kilometer, one and a half kilometers of just sheer ice lying there.

And the process with that water going in and out, loosening the gigantic amounts of ice, producing icebergs, going out to the water, the ocean water, and melting and, as you say, raising the level.

It's a huge work.

Now, what you're doing back here on land, you have fiber optics going down instead of ultrasound.
