I just thought it was there to muffle the noise of all the huffs and the puffs and the groans and the screams.

No, nothing at all.

In the early 1990s, I started wearing industrial strength earmuffs and sometimes also foam earplugs underneath at a gym in Sydney.

It must have been hot.

I can imagine having all of that around my head.

My goodness.

But within a few weeks, three or four other women were also wearing them.

I love this.

You're a trendsetter, Rebecca.

Massively.

I've carried this habit with me to my life in Washington, D.C., and I now also use them when operating my food mixer and processor and even the louder blender.

I'm 69 and when I had my hearing tested last year because it was free, the audiologist was disappointed to discover my hearing was so good she couldn't sell me any hearing aids.
