Across her career, Caterina has, of course, been concerned with paint and its properties, but unlike some artists who deal with abstraction, her works are less about paint per se, and more about its effects, how it operates in environments and societies, what responses it can trigger in our bodies and our imaginations.
And I began our conversation by asking: what are her preoccupations as she embarks on?
And one of the things that's really interesting is that even when you are working on a contained rectangular canvas, it seems to me you don't want it to be contained.
You want it to expand beyond that even when you are working within the confines of a canvas, let alone when you're working in environments and across rooms and into the architectural properties of a space.
Yeah.
I know that you work across multiple works at once, say you're working across several canvases at once.
It's really interesting to me what you said there about how the sort of particular subjectivities of any given moment are going to affect the nature of the work that you produce at that time.
And so therefore, if you're working on several canvases at once and then come back to those same canvases in a different session, we're talking about multiple subjectivities, aren't we?
Right, that's really interesting.
You mentioned about thinking there.
I love this contention of yours that the work is often a kind of trace of your thoughts or a residue of your thinking and so on.
I wonder, therefore, can we sort of create an equivalent?
Can we think of your work as an equivalent to a kind of mapping, a mapping of energies, a mapping of thinking?
Of course, it's not specific, we're not talking about very specific coordinates, but to a certain extent we are embarking with you on a journey.
When we enter into your painted spaces, aren't we?
Yeah.
I mean th there's this marvellous film by Claudia Muller of of you at work.
And I have to say, there's this incredible flow that we enter into with you as we watch you work.
There's this one particular sequence I'm thinking of where you're doing almost like a reverse S shape, and you repeat it with several colours one after the other.
And there's this incredible sense in which you're present in that moment, but also your body seems to be completely in control in a way that seems almost like automatism, almost an automatic gesture.
