Is there a sort of mental state in a way that you have to enter into in that process of painting where you can achieve that kind of level of flow or a level of concentration which almost seems completely like muscle memory or a kind of natural flow?
Let's talk about colour.
I love this idea that you've discussed about colour that you don't want the yellow to be equivalent to a lemon.
You don't want it to be a nameable colour that relates to an object in the world necessarily.
But of course we all of us have associations.
Can you tell us something about the kind of ready made colours that you pick and what you're looking for in those colours?
Are there ever moments in the painting process where you think ooh that's getting too close to illusion?
I have to step back from this or I have to vary this process now because it's beginning to look too much like an illusionistic response to a particular visual phenomenon.

It looks like a sunset or a Mediterranean sky or you know
Yeah.
When I was at art school in the nineteen nineties in the UK, theatrical was like a banned word, you know, like decorative or something.
You know, there were certain kind of territories that you just couldn't enter into that that they were somehow denied to you.
You were at art school in an amazing moment in Germany when painting was so much at the fore, painting was so debated and so on.
Were there kind of boundaries like that in your experience at art school in terms of
of you know, actually engaging with theatricality and so on.
Was it permitted, as it were, or in a way by entering into a a realm of theatricality, was that a subversive act?
Yeah.
And of course, one of the ways that you achieve that, you achieve that level of kind of invitation to the audience is because you're using a spray gun and you can create these amazing fields of colour and quite quickly actually.
