Which historical artist do you turn to the most today?
I was going to say the word that was present in my mind as you were just describing it there is honouring them.
And there is this extraordinary work in Venice called Banmois.
Made in 2026.
I don't know if that was the drawing which took five months.
Yes.
Okay.
And I guess in the very labour of describing it in that intricate detail and donating that much time to it, that is a form of incredibly intense recognition, you know, and as I say, a kind of honouring of their work.
And it's interesting because the show at the Ashmolean was called To Those Sitting in Darkness.
We can talk about the source for that a bit later, but it was a brilliant title because it was about the seduction into knowledge that you were talking about earlier on, but also you were literally addressing things that sit in darkness in museum stores and so on.
It's been for hundreds of years in stores.
One of the historical images that you've worked with informed an extraordinary piece called Giolo's Lament from 2023, which is a series of marble pieces with this hand.
which is etched into them.
And that comes from an etching by John Savage, which depicts a child from the Philippines.
And talking about seduction through knowledge, those pieces are incredibly beautiful.
But when you learn that dark story behind them...
It's almost shaming, you know, as a British person where this was enacted.
I think about the people in Britain in the 17th century that did these things to this poor Filipino boy.
And I guess that's one of the things that your work can do, right?
