Is part of that about not wanting to flood your brain with the works of other contemporary artists?
I'm always intrigued by the extent to which artists, when they're in the middle of a major project, will kind of shut off other contemporary art because they have to be alone with their own thoughts and their own formal language and so on because it can't be in some way contaminated by...
Yeah it's fascinating because you know the V&A is about making that's so fascinating because yeah when you're really at the coalface of of the actual physical processes of putting something together and thinking about how it's going to
be distributed into the world there's actually a really useful series of tools available to you within museums you know i'm interested in whether a lot of museums are approaching you now to come and explore their collections and find ways into them that are this kind of deeply personal but archival instinct that you possess you know do you find yourself on the receiving end of lots of invitations now from museums who are interested in you
Did you even work in that building?
Because lots of students didn't.
One of the things about the Glasgow Art School is that there's a course at Glasgow School of Art, an infamous, brilliant course, which is called Environmental Art.
And you studied painting and printmaking initially, right?
Painting, yeah.
