After the break, I want to take you to a rural part of Wisconsin that helped me understand why.
Sometime in the year 2007, a political scientist living in Wisconsin decided to leave the city of Madison and start driving around the state.
She started hanging out at gas stations, athletic clubs, diners, any place she could find a civic association outside one of the big cities.
She realized that she kept hearing the same conversation in all of them.
Those three respects, Kramer says, are money, the feeling that all the jobs and resources are somewhere else, namely the cities, power, the idea that all the decisions are also made in the cities, and finally, respect, also something cities get more of than rural places.
Together, this all adds up to a feeling.
Resentment.
This feeling has always existed.
Country folk hating city folk, city folk thinking country folk are backwards.
But what Kramer found is you could put numbers to it.
And it had gotten a whole lot more intense starting in the 1970s.
And it wasn't just rural-urban.
