Yes, their life stories took a number of different forms.
So I'd say one of the most common versions in terms of the studies that we collected is people would just write stories of this happened to me and then this happened to me, sort of like a series of biographical steps of I grew up here, I went to college here,
or I didn't go to college, and this is what happened.
So sort of just checking the mark on literally the events that had happened without any connective tissues.
Now, the other examples that we would see is sometimes people would tell these stories of what some psychological researchers called contamination narratives, but we also saw versions where people were saying, I had all this promise in my early days, and I either didn't fulfill it or situations outside of my own control happened.
And I ended up either plateauing or ended up in a state that I'm not particularly proud of right now.
And so instead of being able to face challenges and transform, people might have faced those same challenges and felt like they were not able to succeed in the way that they wanted.
Yes, we looked at a number of different outcomes.
And I think the ones that are most useful to call out was we looked at how resilient people felt that their lives were.
So if they were facing personal problems, people who often told these contamination narratives or these narratives where they felt stuck
did not feel well-equipped in order to face down those challenges.
So they would report that they either tried to ignore personal problems or that they didn't know how to face them.
They felt really powerless.
And we also looked at depressive symptoms, so not a clinical diagnosis, but the idea that people are saying, my mood right now, I feel very downtrodden.
I feel like I don't have a lot going for me.
And the people who told those life stories in that way often reported feeling more in terms of that negative well-being.
That's such an interesting question.
And I think it's one we grappled with a lot as we were doing this work of, are we just showing that people who live really heroic or really positive lives feel very positive about their life?
That would be interesting on some level, but would not be
speaking to sort of the powerful versions of the life story in and of itself and so what we would say is based on the stories that we collected is often people who rated their lives as high on a hero's journey they were living lives that might not be on from the outside a story that you might go they're obviously going to feel like they have a highly meaningful life
