Some of the stories that people would report to me were facing some extremely difficult circumstances.
People who had been in and out of prison, who had dealt with substance abuse, who had dealt with relationship issues.
Things where people would say, I've had a really tough life, and maybe I'm not rich and famous or a huge hero, but...
I've been a hero within the context of my life.
Maybe I've shown a lot of resilience.
Maybe I've helped people who have faced similar circumstances.
And so that to me speaks to some of this of the stories that were really high in terms of hero journeys were not always stories that were just massively amazing from the outside.
Sometimes they were really heartbreaking, but in a way that people seem to find deeper meaning out of them.
Yes.
So there's work out of evolutionary psychology that speaks to this idea that, as you said, our brains are just wired for stories.
And the idea being that when, you know, back in cave person days, there was a lot of uncertainty about the world.
You might eat something and fall ill.
You might face some sort of animal and not know what to do.
And so the idea being that humans learned how to tell these succinct, meaningful stories or packages of information in a way that people would be able to remember that.
and multiply that over thousands and millions of experiences and across thousands of years, is our brains still seem pretty oriented to respond to stories in a powerful way.
And you see this across a lot of different research.
We see that in the courtroom, if lawyers tell their closing arguments in terms of a narrative versus just facts, that that's way more successful.
You can look at the marketing world.
Any commercial that you might see is often a miniature version of a story,
versus them just highlighting the pros and cons of their product.
