We just are really oriented towards stories, and both marketers and anyone who's trying to communicate information will often lean on stories because it helps people remember it, and it helps us know what framework and how do we take that information and act upon it.

So a redemptive arc or redemptive narrative, a lot of this work is done by Dan McAdams, who is actually as part of the Hero's Journey paper, along with my fellow collaborators.
A redemptive arc is quite simply a story that starts negative or starts maybe neutral and ends up positive in some way.
It has a positive arc in terms of
the end of the story.
A contamination narrative, in contrast, is one that might start positive and end up negative in some profound way.
And research has looked at people who tell their stories as either a redemptive arc or a contamination arc will feel profound results in terms of their well-being, the extent that they want to help others in their lives.
So the way that we tell these stories is really important.
And The Hero's Journey is an example of a redemptive arc, though it contains with it some additional elements.
Yes, we see the hero's journey as this really succinct, compelling package of a lot of work that has been done in psychology and social psychology and even organizational behavior over the years.
So running through the elements relatively briefly with protagonists, we know that feeling in charge of your own destiny, feeling like you have a clear sense of yourself, there's a lot of work that shows that that relates to meaning in life.
We know in terms of shifts of experiences that people who are high on the personality trait of openness to experience, they often rate their lives as more meaningful.
In terms of quests, having a sense of purpose or goals is strongly linked to meaning in life.
having allies so social support is probably the most robust predictor of meaning life amongst all of the other things and then in terms of facing challenges and transformation there's a lot of work that shows that people really do find profound meaning out of facing growing and dealing with challenges in their lives and then in terms of legacy there's a lot of work that shows that being pro-social helping donating to others is strongly related to a sense of meaning in life
So what the hero's journey narrative does, maybe consciously, maybe just by coincidence, who knows, is this idea that we have all of this like menu items of things that can make life feel more meaningful.
And how do we put this into a succinct narrative that people want to listen to?
This was one of the things that we were sort of worried about in terms of this work is this idea that we're showing that this narrative matters.
And we had looked at it a number of different ways from looking at how people see their life, tell their life, controlling for various psychological factors.
