We want this to be useful for people.
We don't want just the people who naturally tell their stories of life as a hero's journey to be the only ones to experience these meaning benefits.
And so we sought to develop an intervention to see, can we help people, guide them in terms of retelling their story as a hero's journey?
And as a result of doing this intervention, what we found were many of the same benefits that we had seen just out of people who naturally told their story that way.
We, as a result of taking our intervention, people reported their life meaning to be higher.
They reported that they felt like they were flourishing in their life.
They reported fewer depressive symptoms.
And importantly, they also felt more resilient.
They felt more ready to face down life's challenges that might continue to face them in the future.
This was a study that we had the idea about and we wanted to see if what we're talking about in terms of seeing your life as a hero's journey helps kind of raise your expectations and raise your connection in terms of making meaning.
then that might have other behavioral benefits that are not just related to, yes, my life feels more meaningful.
And so we ran a study in which we had participants look at these random strings of letters.
And the task was, to what extent do you find patterns in these letters?
strings of letters.
And so we had one group of participants take the hero's journey intervention, and we had one group just do a random reflection on basic aspects of their lives.
And what we found was for the participants who had done the restoring intervention, they seemed more primed to just see more meaning overall.
And so while these just looked like strange strings of letters, they actually reported that they felt like there was higher amount of patterns, that there was some underlying aspect to these
strings of letters beyond just complete randomness.
And this sort of pointed us to this fact of being in this mindset of, yes, my life is more meaningful, so there must just be more meaning around me.
It's actually putting us into a mindset to find more meaning everywhere that we can find it.
