I think this is something that's been expected and interest rates have been relatively low compared to where they were two or three years ago.
And for a lot of people, they'll be wondering, they would have been wondering, when are we going to start?
You know, are we there yet?
Are we going to start to see interest rates increase?
For a lot of people, they won't be pleased because obviously things are tough.
There's a lot of people with shortages of money.
The cost of living crisis is a real thing.
It doesn't feel like the economy is firing on all cylinders again.
And that's normally when you expect a reserve bank to be putting up interest rates.
But this Hormuz crisis has really thrown everyone for a curve.
For the Reserve Bank, that means they've got to start.
They've decided now is the time.
There was some debate about whether the now would be the time, but they've said, right, let's start.
We'll see now whether we do another one and another one before the end of the year.
Most people think probably one more, maybe two more before the end of the year.
And so for anyone who's got a mortgage and they're thinking, oh, what does this mean?
Well, it means that probably the housing market for a start is going to be relatively quiet for the rest of the year.
And if they've got a fixed mortgage, they may have seen the rates pick up in the last six to 12 months anyway, because those rates often are based on the expectations of what the Reserve Bank will do.
And so those expectations have been there for a while.
So if you've been refixing or getting a new mortgage, you may have already seen those higher interest rates.
