You're a young girl, your mum has died and dad drops you off at an orphanage.
This is the story of poet and librettist Patricia Sykes, who was just 11 years old when she and her three sisters were left at the Abbotsford convent in Melbourne by their father.
It was the early 1950s, and he couldn't afford to take care of the girls at home, but wanted them to stay together.
So an orphanage felt like his only option.
For more than 100 years, the Abbotsford Convent was home to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, orphan girls, and so-called wayward women.
Today, it's a bustling community space that's home to gallery spaces, cafes, and even a radio station.
But even with its artsy zhuzhup, its institutional past speaks through its weathered walls and fixtures, particularly in the old Magdalene laundry.
Patricia and her sisters lived at the orphanage until she and her older sister, Elaine, were almost old enough to work.
So, although she had a great talent for language and music, Patricia left school at 14 to help support the family.
And it wasn't until her 30s that Patricia was able to resume her studies.
At uni, while studying anthropology, she began to see the Abbotsford Convent as more than an institution she had wanted to escape.
And eventually, she found her way back to the convent on her own terms, as a poet, to tell the stories of dozens of women who lived and labored within its walls.
Her collection of poetry is called The Abbotsford Mysteries.
