It almost felt to me like a Dickensian novel, like when you get these state-of-the-art novels that are centered on London and you have everybody there.

You have foreigners, you have immigrants, you have criminals, you have high finance, you have

I mean, I must say, because I'm going to sound quite critical of some of the people in this later on, that although he obviously was a bit of a Walter Mitty character, Zach, and got in over his head, I have nothing but pity for him because I think, you know, who among us at the age of 14, 15?

And it all just got completely out of hand.

But I think if you're in a very high socially pressured environment and you're made to feel like you have to have certain social tags to perform, like get into the right high school, get, you know,

And it raises, I mean, it's a tragic case of itself.

There's a point at which Patrick Radden Keefe uses it to tell a tale about London more widely, which is it's a morally bankrupt city that has become purely transactional.

The Metropolitan Police evidently did not investigate this appropriately or, sorry, shoddy, but was it deliberately badly investigated because...

The people with whom Zach would have been swept up in might have been dodgy Russians that they were trying to protect or scared off.

I mean, there's all sorts of hints that are never really made, but I think he's trying to paint a picture of a government that is in hock to Russia and therefore will put pressure via the home office to the police to just drop things quietly.

And therefore it's kind of redemptive on the part of the parents that they will not let the matter drop and want an inquest and want a trial.

And still, they're still campaigning.

So he's trying to link all of this to a wider story of a city that has lost its way

and being just, yeah, sold its soul, basically, for nice shiny cars and money.
