And he wanted to bring the best of meat and the best of wool into a breed.
Mm-hmm.
And he created this breed.
They were very popular around Roscommon.
In actual fact, I believe the Roscommon sheep breeders have set up a new breed society because originally they were often known as a Roscommon.
But there's no difference now.
Our priority at the moment is to restore the cultural integrity of the sheep breed.
Remember, when our carpet industry, rug industry, blanket industry, yarn industry, even the iconic iron sweater would have been made from this native Irish wool.
This was the breed that gave her wool to create those industries.
Well, first of all, it's a strong wool.
And a lot of the consumers are really looking for this very soft cashmere, buttery soft wool.
We acknowledge that as Irish wool producers.
But we lost the infrastructure here in Ireland.
We lost our scouring plants.
But we lost our ability at spinning and weaving level to be able to work with Irish wool.
Over in the UK at the moment, there's a brilliant resurgence in using strong British wool back again in blankets, in carpets, in designer tweed, in luxury products.
And they're paying those farmers for that wool.
Here in Ireland, we're happy to go to the UK, pick out a few fleeces.
Hopefully they're Irish because there's no traceability system, remember.
You can bring whatever you want into this country and call it Irish wool.
