That's the same breed of sheep that we saw outside.
That's the same micron, micron being the measurement of the wool.
But how this yarn was processed.
was what this was actually produced processed here in Ireland and this was processed in a woolen spun method and unfortunately what we discovered is when it was being processed like this and the crafters were getting their hands on it they were like oh god we can't use that so we decided to do a little experiment when I say we Michelle Hickey our artist and resident sent over some fleece to Cornwall where they had loads of experience working with fleece from farms and they worsted spun this and
They line the fibres and then this yarn, as you can see, is much softer.
So we need to start having a conversation about how we process our Irish wool.
At the moment, you can market any product and put the label Irish wool in design.
You can actually put Irish wool jumper because the jumper may have been manufactured in Ireland with wool.
And there's nothing out there.
And it's so, so sad that the consumers are not being protected.
There's nothing out there that will guarantee that that wool, that sheep's wool was actually grown locally and it came from, ideally it would come from a native breed.
And I think a lot of farmers are unaware that
most sheep's wool can be processed can be worsted spun and can make these high end garments you know this rush to the bottom this rush to put wool into insulation or fertiliser pellets it's fantastic but will it pay the farmer will it just become a low value raw material for a product that is going to you know ideally it will be manufactured in Ireland maybe it won't but I just think that with such an international reputation for Irish wool it would be gorgeous to see real Irish wool back in Irish wool again
