Plenty of the people on that bookshelf have outperformed the market.
They have no problem doing it, you know?
Well, the fund managers are just playing a different game to what we're playing fundamentally.
I mean, yes, they want to get returns for their clients and they're in the business of generating money for their clients, but that means that they're also in the business of retaining clients.
So, like, we as individual investors, we're not in the business of retaining clients.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's just me, you know.
So, that gives us a big advantage because in the fund manager's head, not only are they trying to get returns, they're also thinking about their returns in the context of all the other fund managers and how they're competing for clients with their other fund managers.
And what you end up with is they all end up pretty much copying each other's homework because the one thing you don't want to be as a fund manager is the guy that's caught left holding the bag.
So, you don't mind just being about the same as everybody else.
The one thing you don't want to be is the guy that underperforms everybody else because then that person loses their clients and the clients go elsewhere.
So, it's just a different- I'm not saying it's bad because I think there's a place for fund managers.
I think there's a place for them to manage people's money and there are a lot of really good ones too.
But they're not solely in the business of-
you know, temperament, blocking out everything else, looking at each investment on its own and picking, you know, based 100% on what they think and what they've believed in their own temperament, they're also in that business of jostling with every other fund manager.
Because Buffett has always said, I'm not playing that game.
And he's been very upfront and open with his clients or Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, obviously, since he took over that company.
He's very honest that I'm not playing the same game that they're playing.
I treat, you know, if you're coming in as an owner of Berkshire Hathaway, that's your decision.
