There are no easy habitats and there are no easy tasks because populations rise to carrying capacity, at which point the efficiency with which you do whatever it is that the environment asks of you is the difference between evolutionarily succeeding and evolutionarily failing.

You know, you can say poking a hole in the ground is simple, and it is, but at the point that you're at carrying capacity and there's not enough food

for more mouths and somebody is going to starve, the efficiency with which you poke the holes in the ground i is going to be the difference between life and death.

So human beings are hellbent on discovering ways to make more of the calories that are at their disposal in every habitat all the time.

At first, before a habitat is full up, before the population reaches carrying capacity, that may not be the case, but then it produces more mouths until you're at carrying capacity, at which point all of these habitats are exerting the same pressure to figure out how to do what you're doing better.
