So I will remind people about something we've talked about in a number of different uh topics, the difference between systematic and random error.

Random error is just noise in your data.

A data point can be wrong for lots of reasons, but if they tend to be wrong in the up direction as often as they're wrong in the low direction and equally in degree,

then more data will swamp out the noise and you'll be able to see the signal.

On the other hand, if you have a systematic bias, like let's say

that you didn't throw out the outliers and a failed sensor reads zero.

It doesn't max out, it mins out.

So your outliers will tend to drag your average down because that's the way the the bias in the in the sensor goes.
