On top of that he's a very hard worker
and he is able to go out and execute because he's not a stuffed guy.
I mean he's got good enough stuff, but he understands the most important thing for me is command.
And I have to be able to pitch effectively to both sides of the plate.
I gotta occasionally change an eye level up top and then I wanna get you chasing my change up down below the zone.
And when you look at the change up, and we've talked about this before, the change up for the staff, and I'll get back to Nick, but the change up for the staff.
Last year they used it a little over eleven percent as a staff.
This year they're around twenty one percent.
So they've almost doubled the usage of that pitch.
And Nick Martinez was the one that kinda said something early in the year where he said, While the rest of the league continues to look for more velocity, hitters look to try to train for velocity, we're gonna be the anti velocity and we're gonna pull the string.
And so the raise, you know
th their kind of philosophy is if you have a change up you're gonna throw it more.
If you don't have a change up, you're gonna start throwing a change up.
And uh that especially when you think about Drew Rasmussen and Kevin Kelly.
But getting back to Nick Martinez and his changeup, his changeup drives his arsenal.
And the reason it's so effective is he locates it well and he has it the biggest differential in velocity in Major League Baseball.
His fastball averages ninety-three, his changeup averages seventy-eight.
Those fifteen miles an hour, that's the biggest differential in velocity between fastball changeup in
major league baseball.
And so it's just really, really hard for these guys to stay back on that pitch.
