a one-off adjustment to prices in a specific commodity, even if that does ripple through the system.
So if we take oil, for example, which clearly factors into shipping, transportation, delivery of all goods, obviously the fuel that one puts in their vehicle, if that adjustment is a one-off, it is inflationary in that year, but it's not necessarily inflationary in years two and three, right?
As you lap...
That higher comparison.
What one worries about and what investors should be worried about is that if those inflation expectations get embedded in consumer behavior, because we continue to see these shocks, then you can have a much more difficult time as a central bank kind of putting that inflation genie back in the bottle.
And so I think that is something that investors do need to worry about.
I mean, inflation has been above target in most developed economies for a number of years.
And obviously, this spike in energy prices either prolongs that or just makes it increasingly difficult to bring it back down to target.
I think the message, to be honest, is to pay attention to fundamentals and not necessarily to what sentiment is moving markets, right?
It is sensible to be invested in this energy sector.
Prices are likely to stay higher for longer.
And so that is takeaway one.
And obviously, the second derivative of that takeaway, too, would be that one does need to be sensible, mindful that inflation may be higher for longer and to build protection in the portfolio as a result of that.
