So, you know, one of the biggest stories of last night were those amendments we mentioned in both Kansas and Missouri.

In Kansas, voters were deciding whether to elect Supreme Court judges.

In Missouri, the uh amendments were about eliminating the income tax and about making it harder to amend the state constitution.

Voters uh spoke very loudly against those legislature promoted amendments.

What do you make of that, Alex?

And yet they keep electing them.

Uh m Matt, do you see the same sort of thing on the Missouri side?

sixty counties or whatever it is in Missouri.

You know, earlier this week we had a couple of your colleagues, uh, political scientists on and we were talking about the amendments, and we talked about the ways that that that both on the Kansas and Missouri side they sort of stood as a referendum on

uh trust in government uh as much as the the content of the the amendments themselves.

I mean, do you think we got a clear statement about people's level of trust in government, or is it is i is there does there need to be a more nuanced reading of these results, Alex?

You know, if we look at the substance of the Missouri amendments for a minute too, Matt, and not just on whether they are a referendum on trust, but but but let's talk for example about Amendment five, the income tax amendment.

I mean, did state leaders miscalculate voters' disdain for taxes?

I mean, they were banking on uh everyone's gonna vote for a tax decrease, and in fact almost no one did when it came to the income tax.

Uh o what was it that didn't resonate with voters there?

I mean let me stay with that one for a minute too, Matt, because uh this was not only uh uh promoted by Republican leaders in the the General Assembly, it was the top legislative priority of Governor Mike Kehoe.

He he put a lot of his political capital as a first term governor on this one issue.

Said it was uh the he made it the center of his state of the state address last year.

What does this do to him?

Uh let's turn to the other part of a primary election, the part that usually takes center stage, which is the candidates on the ballot.
