Uh so you know that is that is why Democrats have have come up with this label for you calling you tax hike mic, right?

They they say that the sales taxes, which will disproportionately burden low-income Missourians, will uh will simply shift those costs to a different group of people and it's the ones making less money.

How do you respond to that?

You know, we uh we had a comment on the text line from someone who I I take to be a supporter of yours.

Uh they they thanked you for promoting the issue and said life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness means in part liberty from excessive taxation.

The only question I would ask, this listener said, is if the budget shortfalls occur, how will they be addressed?

In other words, without that revenue from state income tax, where do you expect lawmakers will add the taxes or add some other revenue revenue to offset that without uh without putting our budget further into deficit?

So the the spending being out of control, uh education, social services, that's the bulk of the Missouri budget.

They're actually funded at lower levels per person than in most other states already.

What what are the cuts?

What are the the spending cuts that you think will will be enough to offset this loss of income tax revenue?

Well and and to that point, uh y we did talk yesterday on this program with State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick.

I know you uh received his uh pretty targeted comments in a report that he issued uh last week.

Urging you specifically to

uh veto uh use your line item veto to reduce the spending in the budget that was approved by the legislature.

Um they proposed uh a budget that would use two point three billion dollars of general revenue surplus and uh reduce the state's current uh you know uh reserves to under a billion dollars.

Uh you you even you the budget you proposed uh actually also

Also proposed using a great deal of general revenue surplus.

Uh I guess the question is uh d when you sign the budget bill or or decide what vetoes to issue, what funds to withhold, uh you have to do that by mid July.
