Listening is something that it's a simple word, but it's often hard to do to make sure we really understand what our patients are feeling in any given moment.
And it goes beyond our call centers and listening to what the calls are.
It includes social media listening.
It includes having focus groups.
It includes talking to our provider partners in terms of what they're experiencing.
So deep listening is something that we've been focused on for a while, but the industry still has some opportunity to step up and do more of.
One of the things that actually resulted from that listening were the commitments that we made in June in partnership with HHS around improving the prior authorization process.
So prior authorization is generally not viewed favorably by people when they hear that terminology.
It's really important, though, because oftentimes people may want a service that's not covered by their health benefits or maybe something that is not actually clinically appropriate.
So it's important to have that service for the small fraction of people that are utilizing things that require it.
But there's a series of commitments that we made, our industry made, in conjunction with HHS that were announced in June to make the prior authorization process work better, more seamless, more rapid, and more technologically enabled.
I think as I step back and reflect on that question, Celia, I start with today, where we are.
And there are three primary reasons why a customer or client hires us at the Cigna Group.
The first one is we can provide better unit pricing for healthcare services than the individual or the employer or the health plan can get.
by themselves, right, through the power of using competition and our scale and our negotiating effectiveness.
So we're able to provide better unit pricing of prescription drugs, better unit pricing when I go into the hospital and have a service, et cetera.
So that's reason number one.
Reason number two, we have thousands of clinicians that work each and every day on given patient situations when they're having their own clinical journey.
So that could be someone who has the unexpected car accident and they need the support of our clinicians to help them work through that.
That could be someone that's diagnosed with cancer and they're not sure how to navigate the system relative to their PCP and their oncologist and all the follow-up care that's required.
