So questions about abstentionism and so on are actually very important because they're kind of bedrock questions for a generation of Republicans, whether you recognize these puppet states, you know, and and so on.

There's a sense that the IRA is being downgraded, that it's going to be an adjunct to the Republican movement rather than central.

So a lot of these arguments would have got pretty bitter anyway, and a lot of people had dropped out.

And once the North blows up, a lot of those people come back.

So there is a question of left and right and there is a question of conservatism versus radicalism.

Though again, for a lot of the people on the ground in Northern Ireland, the young people who get involved, they're not really central questions.

It's who

The biggest organization in your area, the most active organization in the area, who you trust, who you like, and so on.

And that's why the situation is very messy for a couple of years.

Into that.

The Irish Government did feel it had to do something.

Refugees are coming south.

Jack Lynch makes a famous broadcast in the midst of the Battle of the Bogside and Derry, before Belfast had had had blown up, where he says the government cannot stand by and watch, you know, this situation become worse.

People hear that as him saying that we we're not gonna stand idly by and that's what people, you know, later on call the speech.

He says that the Irish government are going to have to send the army to the border with field hospitals because many of the people being injured in Derry, for example, didn't want to travel across the waterside to the hospital.

There they were going to go to Donegal and elsewhere for treatment.

Now

That is a way of moving soldiers to the border.

There's no doubt about that.

And the government do have a contingency plan that, you know, ultimately the army might have to be prepared to defend nationalists.
