You have internal rivalries within the government and

ultimately people like Charles Haye and Niall Blaney become very

publicly identified with a wing of the government that wants more decisive action.

And that's why these are the names that are usually thrown about then in terms of funding a an IRA split.

And the government does set up a subcommittee, which then also has an amount of of of finance to

aid northern nationals.

Now, in Derry and in Belfast and elsewhere, people had formed Defence Committee.

And in the Lower Falls, for example, Jim Sullivan, who's an IRA officer, was chair chairperson of the Defence Committee there.

But they're very broad.

They include people from the Catholic Church, they include local Catholic businessmen, they include representatives of the Nationalist Party and and of other political groups, in some Labour and Trade Union as well.

And they also include people who are veteran Republicans who are returning to the Republican movement having left it.

You know, usually since the end of the border campaign and who were often very critical of the movement for not having done enough in their view.

In in August.

And very soon

Money is being given to these defence committees.

And I think

Everybody in government in the South knew that the defence committees were likely to use it for defence.

And there's

calls that go out, you know, in Irish America and elsewhere to ensure that nationalists are never left undefended again.
