I think it was three o'clock Saturday afternoon.
And, you know, I did tell this story before, John.
I was looking at the scoreboard and there was blokes with white coats going over, putting up the scores manually, like the old scoreboard in Crowe Park behind the goal years ago with the goals and points.
But there's a lad who's going along, walking along,
a very narrow path high up over Wembley Stadium and he went over once to put up the first goal for Korea and then he went back over and it went 3-0 for Korea and I remember there was an awe in the stadium because there wasn't much happening in the English match.
Anyway, it turned out when I was telling this story on the radio one Sunday that
daughter of one of the lads who was turning over the numbers rang in to say that that was her da that was two lads from Waterford went to London for the summer looking for work they were out of college and they went to the office where you go to look for work and they offered them a job in Hyde Park
cutting the grass, looking after the flowers, or doing the scoreboard and wimping at the World Cup.
So they took on that one.
Anyway, the match turned and Portugal won 5-3.
Eusebio got four goals.
So our match was brutal.
England won nothing in the end.
And then I saw the semi-final with Portugal.
And England-Portugal 2-1, Bobby Cheriton did two goals.
Fabulous game.
I was in line with the penalty area where Cheriton struck an iconic goal.
And I was at the final.
Somehow or other, my brother got a ticket.
Not too far from the Royal Box.
