What are you doing?
On the day in question, I was detailed as official car driver for the Westport District Patrol car and I was working on my own.
I actually happened to be in the station at the time a call came in.
And the way the call came in was that there was a traffic accident had occurred out on the old coastal road, as it's known locally, out of Westport, that would have taken you to Morriscan Crowpatrick.
So I left straight away on my own in the tour car to go out and for all intents and purposes, I was going out to investigate a traffic accident.
When I arrived at the scene, as I was travelling out the old coastal road heading towards the Crowpatrick direction, this car had come from a minor road on the left-hand side by Sean O'Malley's house and crashed straight into a wall over a footpath on the opposite side of the road, you know?
He hadn't lost consciousness and he was aware of his whereabouts.
One of the witnesses kind of said to me, you might want to look in the boot.
It's something I will never, ever leave my mind and never has left my mind.
I saw two young boys, fully clothed, kind of facing each other in the boot.
I checked for signs of life.
It appeared to me that they had been dead for some time as I observed that rigor mortis had started to set in, you know what I mean, and the bodies were cold.
And I momentarily froze.
Then I had to kind of kick myself back into action to deal with what was unfolding in front of my eyes.
From the moment I arrived, he never moved from the driver's seat position.
Never moved at all.
I suppose the priority then was him getting treatment for his injuries.
But when I was happy that his injuries weren't that serious, I remember asking him what had happened.
And he said to me after caution that he had killed the boys at around 5am on the morning in question.
And I said, why did you do it?
