The way I like to think about it is this.
Where do returns ultimately come from?
Returns ultimately come from the economy.
A whole bunch of businesses that do a whole bunch of things that meet our daily needs.
We wake up, regardless of what happens in Iran and the Middle East today or tomorrow or next week or what comes out of Trump's mouth in the next month,
You and I will wake up in the morning.
We'll need to be fed, clothed, entertained, insured, banked, medicated when we're sick, transported around.
We'll need to drive somewhere.
And a whole bunch of businesses, or we might even need to fly somewhere, and a whole bunch of businesses and the assets those businesses own
are going to make a profit by meeting all their needs.
And we will benefit from that activity in the form of either the interest on the debt that they have or the dividends they pay their shareholders, the rent that they pay on the properties that they own or a business that might own toll roads.
They collect tolls and they pass that on to their shareholders.
It's all income that fundamentally comes from the economy.
And that, to me, is investing at its heart.
And so can I get that from just a straight 60-40 portfolio of just shares and just bonds?
Yeah, kind of.
But I want to have the broadest range of opportunities I can find.
And if I can still benefit from that growth in the economy,
by investing in a wider range of assets, that's a good thing.
Diversification, as they often say, is the only free lunch in investing.
