So we diversified.

So we're raising dairy cows for other herds, for other farms.

We're raising beef for consumers and we're cash cropping and trying to figure out new ways to move on into the future.

Well, we don't have any immigrant labor.

Our farm is small enough that it was really my dad and me when I was a kid.

And then when I pursued my career in writing and business journals and public policy, my sister moved in and she's really the one with the talent for crops and cattle.

So it's him and her.

It's my nephew.

We've had different hired men off and on.

We've never had immigrant labor in our area in southern Wisconsin.

There are farms that have that.

It's usually farms that maybe have a couple hundred cows.

By today's standards, they're still kind of small to mid-sized farms, you know, so I'm not going to tell you it's only the big guys.

Yeah, I put my time back and forth.

So we live in Sacramento, the farm to fork capital where they're my wife's family.

And I split my time between there and the family farm just because my writing and work can be anywhere.

So I go back and forth and I help out on the business side.

My dad throws me in a tractor.

on my supposed days off that's a farm kid's fate well i can see from the john deer head looks like that and the flat shirt and the jacket that you're used to you know getting out there and getting your hands dirty yeah a little bit um but you know to answer your question about neighboring farms there are absolutely farms that you know you've got the farmer who might be older and aging and even if he is in condition to milk it's just one guy right you got the one owner and a lot of times these guys do a lot of hands-on work on their farm but they'll have anywhere from two to three to a half dozen or more

immigrant farm workers who are there milking their cows two, sometimes three times a day.
