So in COVID, we had this huge stress test of our food system and we failed it.
That's why food was scarce, why food was so expensive, why it's still been rising faster than the rate of inflation, whatever the parties say about why inflation is happening.
We're seeing with bird flu right now, too.
You talked about the price of eggs.
Why are eggs so expensive?
Bird flu is hitting.
But the thing that people aren't talking about is that the underlying issue is that we have this highly integrated food system that doesn't leave a lot of paths.
If you've got a bunch of farmers down the road who are selling eggs as well as a whole bunch of different types of food products and stuff,
It's not as big of a deal for you if a massive distribution center across the country goes down wiping out our egg supply for a couple of weeks.
Right.
But we have this supply chain that has it's a modern miracle, but it has these deep vulnerabilities.
Yeah, it's because of the bird flu.
And when the bird flu wipes out, say it infects a farm or say it infects, you'd learn a shipment of eggs that was going through a big distribution center has bird flu, whatever the case may be.
Because our food system is so integrated, the impact is more pronounced.
Yeah.
You know, if we were more diffused, we had a less concentrated food system.
It would still be terrible to have bird flu, but you'd have more eggs coming from more parts of country, more places.
Yeah.
You know, I mean, if you have an immigration policy that isn't accounting for that workforce, the scarcity will be exacerbated.
The food prices will go up both because of that scarcity and because there's probably going to be more expensive labor that needs to be hired to do that work.
