And then they developed up from that, like, I mean, they saw that there was money to be made in drugs and they started selling drugs.
And they started utilizing people in Dolphin House and Fatima Mansions and Rialto.
People who had nothing.
The next generation.
They were using them, like, I mean, as their foot soldiers, like, I mean, to sell the drugs and that.
And then, of course, like, those places became absolutely saturated with people hung out on drugs, like, I mean, and spread all over the city, like, I mean, like wildfire, like, I mean, and
So yeah, like everything's just changed so quickly then.
Everything, absolutely.
Like, I mean, but you were there, like, I mean, you could see it evolving and the guards had to evolve with that.
Like, I mean, for years we had, the Garda Síochána had been very sort of slow to move.
You know, I remember back in the early 80s, like with the guards, we had a meeting in the Garda club in Arlington Street.
And the detectives, like, we, you know, we wanted to be armed, like, because we were going out and we were carrying out searches and armed, where we could meet up with armed people.
We were going on patrols where we could meet up with armed people.
And we were going on searches, like, all of these type of things.
So, like, our lives were in danger.
There's no point in saying they weren't.
But I remember a certain, I won't mention his name, but he was a certain chief superintendent who came up to the meeting and he said, we didn't have anything to worry about because the criminals knew the difference between special branch and ordinary detectives.
And even though you were in paint jobs, they knew the difference.
Like, I mean, that was the type of mentality that you had in the job at the time, you know, and the higher echelons.
So, like, I mean, but it took a while, but then you got, like, I mean, I worked with some great people down through the years, like, I mean, and I worked with a number of the commissioners, like, I mean, and that, like, I mean, in my, you know, as to say, as I worked along, and they were great people and very, very, very good, you know, detectives and that sort of stuff, like, I mean, so I had a great experience in life, like, I mean, working with these people.
